Obituary of Shirley W. Hammond

HOWARD: Shirley W. Hammond, 85, of Cty. Rte. 69 passed away Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at her home following an extended illness. Shirley was born August 15,1938 in Hornell to the late Ford G. and Laura A. (Rohrer) Walton. On August 15, 1958 in Hornell, she married Willard R. Hammond who predeceased her in June of 2023. She was a graduate of Hornell Highschool class of 1957 and a graduate of the Rochester Business Institute. Shirley worked as payroll and accounting clerk for the former Erie/Lackawanna Railroad and St. James Mercy Hospital, and Taylor Wine (Great Western Winery). She finished her career in payroll and accounting at the Bath VA Hospital retiring in 2001. Outside of work, she enjoyed cake decorating, baking and sewing. Shirley is survived by a son Willard R. Hammond, Jr. of Springwater, two daughters, Susan Smith of Prattsburg and Molly (Karl) Clymo of Haskinsville, 8 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and 4 great, great grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a brother Richard Walton. There will be no prior calling hours. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held a later date. Memorial contributions in Shirley’s name may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD, 21741. Arrangements are in care of the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home in Canisteo.
