Obituary of Dorothy Ruth Whitmore

Addison | Dorothy Ruth Whitmore, 86, of Maple St. Addison, entered into rest on Saturday, November 9, 2013 at Elcor Nursing and Rehabilitative Care in Horseheads. Dorothy was born on June 10, 1927 in Schenectady, NY, the daughter of Paul and Mary Russell VanAuken. She was a 1945 graduate of Scotia High School. Dorothy attended SUNY Cortland where she received a Bachelors degree in Elementary Education in 1949. On July 2, 1950, Dorothy married Matthew F. Whitmore Jr. She taught school in several schools around New York State. She and Matt settled in Addison where, after 27 years of teaching there took her retirement. Even after retirement, she was a substitute teacher for 14 years. A long time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Addison, Dorothy also was a volunteer at Corning Hospital for many years. Activities with family and friends, cooking, reading and doing volunteer work kept Dorothy very busy. Surviving Dorothy is her beloved husband of 63 years, Matthew F. Whitmore Jr. of Addison. Also surviving are her sons and daughters in law, Michael and Mikelene Whitmore of Chula Vista, CA and Matthew P. and Marti Whitmore of Addison, her grandchildren, Matthew Patrick (Leia) Whitmore and Meghan Whitmore and two nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul VanAuken and her sister, Judith Martin. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening, November 14, from 6-9 PM at the First Presbyterian Church of Addison, Church St. Addison. Her funeral service will be conducted there at 11 AM on Friday with Rev. Peter Marr officiating. Burial will be made in Addison Rural Cemetery. Memorials in Dorothy's name may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
